Letter from the Editor
Dear readers
The Mexican comedian that achieved the highest recognition
in the 20th Century nationwide and abroad was without doubt Mario Moreno,
better known as "Cantinflas". Having begun acting in "las
carpas", - popular circus-like tents where political comedy shows
were given - he first obtained popularity in Spanish speaking countries,
then his fame became international. "Cantinflas" came to Mazatlan
at the peak of his career. Joaquin Lopez, the historian and chronicler
of Teacapan, takes us through the history of this unique performer.
Not many years after Cantinflas’ visit here, important
exponents of the Beat generation came to Mazatlan and Mexico searching
for ways to experience other realities that would permit them to get away
from everyday American lifestyle. Dr. Ernesto Norzagaray, president of
the Historic Society of Mazatlan, writes about this generation of quest
and excess that would paradoxically lead some of its members to Zen Buddhism.
These are two portraits that, although very different,
are also very rich in their diversity. All this is part of what once happened
and continues happening in Mazatlan, an open port to the world.
We hope you enjoy this edition.
